The 26th Constitutional Amendment passed the Senate, with 65 senators voting in favor

Pakistan’s upper house, the Senate, has approved all 22 clauses of the constitutional amendment. Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani while announcing the results of the constitutional amendment bill said that 65 votes were in favor while four senators were against.
Federal Law Minister Prime Minister Nazir Tarar presented the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill in the Senate on Sunday night.
The meeting of the Senate of Pakistan is going on in the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani.
At the beginning of the session, Federal Law Minister Prime Minister Nazir Tarar presented a resolution to suspend the normal proceedings of the Senate, which was approved.
Before the constitutional bill was officially presented in the House, the Law Minister and the parliamentary leaders of the political parties in the Senate expressed their views in this regard.
After that, the Law Minister presented a resolution to present the Constitutional Amendment Bill in the House, which was approved by a majority vote. At present, the process of approval of the bill is in progress.
There were 65 votes in favor of clause-by-clause approval of various provisions of the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill and 4 votes against.
Earlier, while presenting the draft of the 26th Constitutional Amendment in the Senate, Prime Minister Nazir Tarar said that the procedure for appointing judges was changed in the 18th Amendment and in it, the Parliament, after much effort and long consideration, has Introduced a system to make the appointment of judges in the higher courts i.e. High Courts, Supreme Court and Federal Sharia Court transparent.
The system was designed on merit basis to involve relevant stakeholders. The Prime Minister and the President transferred their powers to the Parliament so that the Judicial Commission of Pakistan sat down with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and two judges, representatives of the Pakistan Bar Council, the Law Minister and the Attorney General to discuss the candidates’ information. Go and finalize their nominations and send them to the parliamentary committee, in which both the government and the opposition are equally represented.
