The four interlocking rings that make up the distinctive Audi logo have an interesting origin story. These rings stand for the four different automakers that came together to form the Auto Union in 1932.

The German engineer August Horch founded Horch, the earliest of these businesses, in 1899. It’s interesting to note that “Horch” sounds a lot like the German word for “listen.”
Mr. Horch left the company soon after launching Horch and formed Audi, which means “listen” in Latin.The rings in both logos are explained by this relationship.The other two firms in the merger were DKW, which began making automobiles in 1928 after initially specializing in steam engines, and Wanderer, which was established in 1911.
But the move from Auto Union to Audi was more complicated. Auto Union manufactured a variety of automobiles following World War II, such as cars, motorcycles, and vans.
Yet in the middle of the 1950s, it ran into problems with money and manpower. Even after Auto Union was purchased by Daimler-Benz in 1958, the business was still having financial difficulties. In the end, Volkswagen bought it in 1964.
Following VW’s acquisition, Auto Union started offering Audi vehicles for sale. After purchasing NSU, a different automaker, in 1969, the business changed its name to Audi NSU Auto Union AG. In 1985, this relatively long title was condensed to Audi AG.The four rings have a lasting legacy since they symbolize both the history of Audi and the union of four innovative automakers.
It is impossible not to consider how things may have turned out differently if Audi had followed suit by another brand.
