A state funeral for cricketer Phillip Hughes has been called off. The New South Wales Government has announced it has cancelled plans for a state memorial service in support of cricketer Phillip Hughes Mr Mike Baird believed that there was no need for the memorial service after Hughesโ€™ funeral in his home town of Macksville.

โ€œLast Wednesdayโ€™s funeral in Macksville was a wonderful service and a fitting tribute to Phillipโ€™s life,โ€ It was a privilege to be a part of it. It was a community event attended by thousands of people, watched live by millions of Australians and observed at a number of grounds around the country, including the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The Premier Mike Baird has issued a statement saying the decision followed consultation with the Hughes family and Cricket Australia.

โ€œWe consulted with the family and with Cricket Australia, and all parties felt that given the enormous outpouring of support at last Wednesdayโ€™s funeral, that a state memorial service would no longer need to be held.โ€

There will be a short ceremony at the Sydney Cricket Ground prior to the start of the fourth Test between Australia and India. .

New South Wales players will also wear “PJH 707”, Hughes’s initials and Blues cap number, on their playing shirts for the rest of the Sheffield Shield season.

Tributes will continue before the start of play at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday, where Australia and India will belatedly begin their Test series.
