Punjab Unveils Interest-Free E-Bike and E-Taxi Scheme for Youth
The Punjab government has approved a proposal to provide 50,000 electric bikes and 5,000 electric taxis on an interest-free basis in the upcoming provincial budget.
The initiative is aimed at supporting students and unemployed youth while promoting affordable and environmentally friendly transportation across the province. The proposal has been cleared for inclusion in the next fiscal year’s budget and is expected to create new employment opportunities for young people.
Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will be able to receive electric vehicles through easy installment plans and interest-free financing. Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said the government is also considering additional incentives, including support for vehicle registration costs.
He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to empowering youth and increasing their participation in economic activities.
According to the minister, the e-bike and e-taxi schemes will help thousands of young people access better employment opportunities while encouraging electric mobility and reducing environmental pollution in Punjab.
The development comes as the provincial government reviews its public transport policies ahead of the new budget. Authorities are also evaluating the future of the province’s free public transport programme.
A briefing presented to the chief minister suggested that the continuation of the free transport facility could be linked to fuel prices. Under the proposal, the service may be withdrawn if petrol prices fall to Rs300 per litre.
Officials are also considering a separate proposal not to extend the free travel programme further. A final decision on both matters is expected in the coming weeks as budget preparations continue.
