Pakistan-Afghanistan Tensions Rise After Deadly KP Attacks

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have increased again after a series of deadly attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa left several security personnel and civilians dead.
The latest incident took place in Lakki Marwat, where a bomb hidden in a rickshaw exploded in a crowded bazaar on Tuesday, killing at least nine people and injuring more than two dozen others. Police said two traffic police officers and a woman were among those killed. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast, but officials suspect militant involvement due to the pattern of recent attacks in the region.
The blast came only days after a major attack on a police post in Bannu district, where militants used a vehicle-borne explosive device followed by gunfire. Pakistani officials said 15 police personnel were killed in the attack. Islamabad blamed militants based in Afghanistan and lodged a formal diplomatic protest with Kabul.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry summoned the Afghan chargé d’affaires and issued a strong demarche, saying the attack was planned by terrorists operating from Afghan territory. Pakistan also warned that it reserves the right to respond decisively to threats against its citizens and security forces. Afghanistan’s Taliban government has repeatedly denied sheltering anti-Pakistan militants, saying Pakistan’s security problems are internal.
The growing violence has renewed concerns over the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, commonly known as the TTP, and affiliated militant networks operating along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Pakistan has long accused the Afghan Taliban authorities of allowing TTP fighters to use Afghan soil for attacks inside Pakistan. Kabul denies the allegation, but the issue has remained one of the biggest sources of tension between the two neighbors.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has seen a sharp rise in militant violence in recent years, especially after the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021. Border districts such as Bannu, Lakki Marwat, North Waziristan, and South Waziristan have remained highly sensitive due to repeated attacks on police, security forces, and public places.
The latest KP attacks have added pressure on both governments at a time when Pakistan-Afghanistan relations are already strained. Earlier this year, both sides were involved in border tensions and cross-border accusations, while China has attempted to mediate between Islamabad and Kabul.
Security analysts warn that if militant attacks continue, Pakistan may take a tougher diplomatic or security response. For now, authorities have tightened security in affected areas, while investigations into the Lakki Marwat and Bannu attacks are underway.
