In Islam, prayer (called Salah or Namaz) is one of the five pillars of the faith. It is mandatory for Muslims and is required five times every day at specific times determined by the position of the sun.

The five obligatory prayers are:

  1. Fajr
Performed before sunrise. It starts at dawn and ends when the sun rises. This prayer has two units (rakats) of compulsory (fard) prayer, usually preceded by two rakats of Sunnah.

  2. Dhuhr
Performed after the sun passes its highest point (zenith). It usually includes four fard rakats with additional Sunnah rakats before and after.

  3. Asr
Performed in the afternoon before the sun begins to set. It also includes four fard rakats.

  4. Maghrib
Performed just after sunset. It has three compulsory rakats and is usually followed by recommended (Sunnah and Nafl) prayers.

  5. Isha
Performed at night after dusk. It includes four fard rakats, with additional Sunnah and Witr prayers often offered after.
