The University of Okara’s (UO) Department of Media & Communication Studies (DMCS) organized a seminar titled as ‘Celebrating Responsible Journalism: A Tribute to Salman Ghani’ with an aim to commemorate the veteran journalist’s lifelong services and achievements.
The event was presided by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Sajjad Mubin. Salman Ghani was the Chief Gust while other notables included Chaudary Riaz-ul-Haq Juj, Member National Assembly from Okara, Mazhar Hussain Sahi, renowned Social Worker from Okara, and Aslam Dogar, a celebrated Columnist and Analyst.
Opening the seminar, Dr. Zahid Bilal, Head of the DMCS, welcomed the guests and students. Discussing the journalistic journey of Salman Ghani, he said that Ghani always strived for peace, prosperity, stability, optimism and love through his writings and analysis. He regarded Salman Ghani as ‘Awami Journalist’ for addressing public issues.
Aslam Dogar, in his talk, termed Salman Ghani as a humble and selfless person. He further told, “The real objective of press freedom should be the pursuit of truth.” He linked the development of a nation with the betterment of its universities. Hailing the recent progressive interventions of the VC, he argued that the UO would soon transform the economy and culture of the entire region.
Riaz-ul-Haq praised the VC for steering the university on the track of rapid progress. He claimed that Salman Ghani was the pride for the whole of Okara. “Yellow journalism should be replaced with responsible journalism,” said Juj.
Mazhar Sahi told, “We are proud of Salman Ghani for bringing Civil Award to Okara.”
Salman Ghani, while addressing to the participants of the event, thanked to the UO administration, the VC and the DMCS for honoring him. He claimed that the UO was going to be leading university of Pakistan under the leadership of Prof. Mubin. He also thanked to Riaz-ul-Haq for securing funds worth 1.5 billion for the UO.
Discussing his journalistic history, he said, “My journalism is associated with Pakistan and its people.” Talking about the recent military might of Pakistan, he said, “The credit of this victory goes to the harmonious efforts of the armed forces and political leadership of Pakistan.” He also applauded the contribution and role of women in the Pakistani politics. He said, “Post-10 May Pakistan is going to be an entirely new Pakistan. We just need to convert our political might into the economic one.” He appreciated the Pakistani media for playing positive and responsible role during the recent Indo-Pak conflict.
Commending the VC’s leadership, he argued, “The UO should be proud to have a young and energetic VC because only such type of person can ignite patriotism and positive energy among the youth.”
In his closing remarks, Prof. Sajjad Mubin welcomed Salman Ghani and all other distinguished guests in the event. Terming him as a well-celebrated journalist, the VC said that Ghani’s laurels was a real pride for Okara. He advised the students of the DMCS to practice responsible journalism and pursue truth. He said that everything in life could be made possible with hard work, commitment and truth. He conferred Riaz-ul-Haq and Mazhar Sahi with the titles of ‘Benefactor of the University’ and ‘Friend of the University’ respectively for their unwavering support.
Other speakers including Aslam Paracha, Salman Qureshi and Rai Ahmed Hassan Kharal also applauded Salman Ghani’s contribution in journalism and social work.
At the end of the event, shields of honor were presented to Salman Ghani and the guests.
