IMF Demands Immediate Increase in Petrol Diesel Prices in Pakistan

Islamabad – March 6, 2026:
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked Pakistan to immediately increase the prices of petrol and diesel during ongoing virtual talks with the government.

According to official sources, the IMF urged the government not to provide any subsidy on petroleum products and instead pass the impact of global price changes directly to consumers.

Petroleum Levy Target Must Be Maintained

Sources revealed that the IMF also emphasized maintaining the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) targets on petrol and diesel.

The government has set a levy collection target of Rs 1,468 billion by June 30, out of which Rs 822 billion (over 60%) has already been collected during the first six months of the fiscal year, from July to December.

Energy Saving Measures Also Discussed

During the discussions, several energy conservation proposals were considered to help control the country’s current account deficit.

The proposed measures include:

  • Shifting schools and colleges to online classes in the first phase

  • Implementing smart working (work from home) for universities and government offices in the second phase

  • Fixing opening and closing times for shops and markets

  • Encouraging delivery-only services for groceries and restaurants

Authorities are also working on a comprehensive implementation plan for these measures.

Petroleum Reserves at Stable Level

Government officials stated that petroleum product reserves in Pakistan are currently at a satisfactory level, though the situation is being closely monitored due to rapidly changing global conditions.

The Prime Minister will soon receive a briefing on supply routes and price trends. Additionally, authorities have suggested strict action against hoarding and illegal transportation of petroleum products based on intelligence reports.
