Actor Imran Khan’s ex-wife Avantika Malik recently opened up about her divorce and her life after it in an interview.
The interview comes after Imran Khan has already spoken about the end of his marriage on several occasions. Avantika said that although she used to consider divorce as a disaster like any other person, her thinking changed with time.
“The end of a marriage is not a doomsday, but at that time I felt that if my marriage broke up, I would not be able to survive. I was sure that I would not be able to spend a single day without him,” she says.
She added, “When we decided that this relationship was ending, I cried like a close loved one had died. I was very scared, especially because I was not self-sufficient at that time. But I also knew that I would not come out on the streets because I come from a privileged family.”
Describing the divorce process, Avantika said that it was not all sudden. We first decided to live separately for some time, and then finally got divorced. All this happened during the Corona pandemic.
Recalling her childhood experiences, Avantika said that since her parents had also separated, the concept of divorce was not so foreign or embarrassing for her. “I have seen my mother live with pride all her life,” she says.
Recalling her and Imran’s long association, she says, “We met when we were 19, and spending so many years together created a kind of emotional dependency. I didn’t even know how to book a plane ticket on my own.”
Avantika also admitted that she felt deep disappointment and shame at the end of the relationship. “People used to call us the ‘golden couple’, and when we broke up, I felt like I let everyone down.”
Avantika and Imran have been together for almost 20 years and have a daughter, Amara. Speaking on parenting, she said, “Initially, my daughter had a lot of questions, like: ‘Will I get a new mommy?’ I laughed and told her: ‘No, son, you’ll stick with her!’”
We balanced our time for her, she explained. She spends half the week with me and half with Imran.
