Punjab Petrol Crisis: Maryam Nawaz Orders Work-From-Home, Schools Closed Until March 31

Punjab Government Announces Emergency Measures During Petrol Crisis

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a series of major measures across the province in response to the ongoing petroleum crisis.

The provincial government has decided to reduce fuel usage, limit official transport, and shift many government functions online until the situation improves. These steps aim to ensure the availability of petroleum products and maintain essential services for citizens.

One of the most significant decisions includes the closure of schools, colleges, and universities across Punjab from March 10 to March 31. However, examinations will continue according to the previously announced schedules.

Educational institutions have been instructed to conduct online classes during this period to avoid disruption in academic activities.

Fuel Allowances Cut and Protocol Vehicles Banned

In a major austerity move, the Chief Minister ordered an immediate 50% reduction in petrol and diesel allowances for government officials’ vehicles.

In addition, protocol vehicles accompanying provincial ministers and senior officials have been banned. Only one vehicle will be allowed for essential security purposes.

The decision is intended to significantly reduce fuel consumption during the crisis.

Government Offices to Shift Toward Work From Home

To minimize transportation and fuel usage, the Punjab government has also allowed work-from-home arrangements in government offices.

Only essential staff will be required to attend offices physically, while other employees may perform duties remotely.

Government operations will continue through online meetings and teleconferences, ensuring that administrative work remains uninterrupted.

Digital public services such as e-business services and the “Maryam Ki Dastak” initiative will continue functioning for public convenience.

District Petroleum Monitoring Committees to Control Supply

To ensure fair distribution of petroleum products, the government has ordered the creation of District Petroleum Monitoring Committees in every district of Punjab.

These committees will monitor:

  • Petroleum supply and distribution

  • Illegal hoarding or price manipulation

  • Transport fares and fuel pricing

The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has also been assigned the task of developing a track-and-trace system for petroleum products to improve monitoring and transparency.

Outdoor Events and Festivals Postponed

As part of the emergency measures, the government has also banned outdoor government events.

The popular Horse and Cattle Show cultural festival has been postponed until further notice.

The Chief Minister has also advised the private sector to:

  • Avoid unnecessary gatherings and events

  • Allow employees to work from home where possible

  • Call only essential staff to offices

Public Advisory During the Crisis

Maryam Nawaz urged the public to cooperate with the government during the crisis.

Citizens have been requested to:

  • Avoid late-night shopping

  • Avoid unnecessary travel

  • Not hoard essential items

  • Limit outdoor functions and gatherings

She emphasized that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to exploit the situation by charging illegal transport fares or hoarding fuel.

Unity Needed to Face Difficult Times

The Chief Minister also praised Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir for their leadership during the challenging situation.

She said strong nations overcome difficult moments through unity, patience, and responsible behavior.
